Staff Perspectives Inauguration

I’ve been in BMF’s Audit Department since I graduated from Kent State University 4 years ago, now entering my 5th rotation of what we affectionately refer to as “busy season.” I enjoy long moonlight walks on the beach in the summer and making snow angels during the winter months for my friends and families in their yards (an inexpensive gift for the holidays if you are strapped for cash!).

When I was in my accounting classes in college and spoke with friends that were already working in accounting firms, I often heard comments about ‘busy season’ and ‘workplace culture’ and wondered what all the hub-bub was about. And if you’re still in college, you may also be wondering the same kind of questions, like “What is busy season?” “How does college translate to real-world accounting?” “What is workplace culture?” “Why am I reading this article written by a guy who makes snow angels in people’s yards?”

The answer is simple. We’re opening our minds, doors and hearts to you, our readers, to shed some behind-the-scenes insider perspective on all these curiosities. We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce to you our inaugural Staff Perspectives post! This series, written by our very own staff, will take you inside the life of a BMF’er and cover a variety of topics based on their work-life and experiences here at our firm.

The aim is to be a resource on what public accounting is like for young professionals. These posts will allow you to see that busy season isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be. Trust me, I remember all the busy season horror stories I heard during my college days and hopefully, our insight will help put things in a different perspective…a staff’s perspective.

Yes, there are aspects of public accounting that can be tough and make you wonder why you ever chose the accounting path to start. But once you realize the impact you can make with individuals and businesses – achieving a goal, building relationships, executing sophisticated projects and strategic decisions – you’ll know you made the right choice.

What you’ll find as you navigate through your career is that you will meet a lot of different people with very different opinions. The best advice I can give is to be a sponge and soak up as much information as you can and use that information to be the best version of yourself. For example, I am the weird, socially awkward, pants sometimes to tight, a quiet but competitive guy at BMF. A status I was not originally shooting for when my dad told me to shoot for the stars and be the best version of myself. But that’s okay because, at the end of the day, I know I worked hard with my teams to accomplish the common goal of client service and satisfaction.
