Ohio 2024 Sales Tax Holiday: Expanded Dates and Higher Price Limits on Tax-Free Shopping

The Ohio Department of Taxation announced that the 2024 Sales Tax Holiday will begin on Tuesday, July 30, and run through Thursday, August 8, ending at 11:59 pm. This extension from the usual Friday through Sunday event means more days to shop tax-free. Additionally, the holiday will now include more items and have a higher price limit.

During the 2024 sales tax holiday, you can purchase goods priced at $500 or less without paying sales tax. These purchases can be made both in-person or online. However, the following items are not included:

  • watercraft
  • motor vehicles
  • alcoholic beverages
  • tobacco
  • vapor products
  • anything containing marijuana

For example, you can purchase two shirts, five pairs of pants, one coat and one pair of shoes. As long as each item is $500 or less, the entire purchase would be tax-free. If your qualified total is $450, you could save over $30 in taxes.

This year’s expanded holiday offers more opportunities for savings on a wider range of items. In previous years, the tax-free holiday only applied to:

  • clothing items priced at $75 or less;
  • school supplies priced at $20 or less; and
  • school instructional material priced at $20 or less.

For additional questions, Ohio has provided a list of FAQs regarding the sales tax holiday.
